What is your recipe for success in the workers’ comp sector?

We are on the heels of a jam-packed month of conferences! What was the lineup? First, the California Workers’ Compensation & Risk Conference, Dana Point, then CAJPA in Lake Tahoe and the Entrepreneurial Insurance Symposium in Dallas, followed closely behind by STRIMA in Montana, and finally the AGRIP Educational Forum in Baltimore. In case you missed any of these conferences, let me fill you in.

We kicked off with our Kentucky Derby hats at the CWC & Risk conference in beautiful Dana Point. The first speaker was V.J. Dowling, founder of Dowling & Partners Securities, and he shared information about innovation in the insurance industry today. He offered intriguing insights into the past 30 years of change in the property and casualty sector. The biggest takeaway at the conference though? Empathy from the beginning is important! This rings particularly true at Company Nurse.

Next, at the Entrepreneurial Insurance Symposium, we were amidst 400 forward-thinking insurers, intermediaries and agents with a purpose to innovate in this space. Talk about a meeting of the minds. Joel Cavaness, president of Risk Placement Services, spoke on his story and the importance of keeping entrepreneurial spirit and a culture of risk taking alive in the insurance business. His presentation, Navigating A Changing Landscape in the Intermediary Business, detailed the many insurance names no longer in existence over the past 20 years, and some of their mistakes that caused them to fail.

Then, we were off to CAJPA. What is our recipe for success in the workers’ comp sector? We discovered that we love to find solutions. We were inspired by Motivational Keynote Speaker Erin Andrews of FOX Sports.

While the Southern California coast is lovely, we’d say Montana is the perfect spot for a conference – that’s exactly where we headed for STRIMA. Did you know the name “Montana” is derived from the Spanish word for “land of the shining mountains”?

Finally, we arrived at the AGRIP Educational Forum October 1, so check out our Facebook page to hear all about it. Speakers are leading sessions on financial management and investments, underwriting, and loss control/risk management. We’ll take good notes and be sure to share key points.

Hope to see you December 6-8 at the National Workers’ Compensation & Disability Conference in Las Vegas! Would love to meet up if you will be there.

Paul Binsfeld is the founder and president of Company Nurse, LLC, a firm that specializes in medical triage and injury management for workers’ compensation. In Q4 2016, Binsfeld formally launched the first-to-market SaaS solution for worker’s compensation nurse triage management.

Binsfeld’s career began as a workers’ compensation consultant with mid-size employers helping to streamline claims processes and improve outcomes for injured workers. By working with many different types of employers, he identified a common need for early intervention in the workers’ compensation claims and injury management process, and thus, Company Nurse was born in 1997. Binsfeld – one of the pioneers of the pre-claim nurse triage industry – was recently appointed to the Entrepreneurial Insurance Alliance Advisory Board of Directors. He has over 25 years of experience in workers’ compensation and is one of the most influential leaders in the market.
