Stepping in to help a complete stranger embodies the core values of our company

Being helped over the finish line by two gentlemen, a woman was in desperate need of medical attention – but just how critical the need wasn’t visibly apparent to onlookers. That is, until Christine Larson caught a glimpse of the situation.

Christine, Injury Care Coordinator Co-Lead for Company Nurse, organized her coworkers to participate in the Steps for Vets over Mother’s Day weekend – a continuation of our support to men and women that have served our country.

At the Walk for Veterans, Christine Larson didn’t hesitate to jump into an emergency situation and show compassion for a complete stranger. Christine saw the woman and was concerned that she was not coherent, and not properly positioned given the symptoms she observed. So, Christine asked the gentlemen if medical attention was on the way – and it was not. Christine quickly took action and laid the woman on her side, which had been good timing since the woman began vomiting shortly thereafter.

With her medical expertise, Christine knew the woman’s head had to be positioned in such a way as that the woman would not experience choking. Upon Christine’s request, the gentlemen had called 9-1-1 and the paramedics soon arrived and took over.

Christine’s response to the whole situation: “It’s second nature to jump right in and help. I’m just glad the woman is okay now.”

This isn’t the first – or last time – that Christine stepped in, took action, and showed compassion. Just a few weeks earlier, she helped a friend that went into diabetic shock during a camping trip. With her quick and decisive action and care, he is thankfully doing well too.

Given Christine is managing our core values program, I’d say she has more than proven she is well suited for the role in exemplifying our guiding principles:

  • Compassion for everyone
  • Go the extra 2 miles
  • Do the right thing
  • Driven to find solutions
  • Work together to work it out

Have you showed compassion for a stranger today?
